September 2009
22/9/09 Insecurities
This is a message from Northamptonshire West Police to all residents in Northamptonshire West.
Recent analysis has shown that between September 2008 - August 2009 52% of all house burglaries in Northampton were committed through insecure doors and windows. This means that more often than not opportunist burglars don't even have to break in, carry tools or risk making a noise.
Crime prevention advise often sounds patronising, but despite all the advice and warnings this problem is just getting worse as between September 2007 - August 2008 only 45% of house burglaries were through insecurities.
The worse areas are those areas around Southfields, The Mounts, Semi Long and Abington Avenue.
They are not called locks for nothing!
Thank you
Chief Inspector Martin Kinchin

22/9/09 Distraction Burglaries
Distraction Burglaries have recently occurred in other parts of the country where the victim receives a telephone call from a male person purporting to be an engineer involved with Digital Switchover. The male informs the victim that due to having recently had a new Freeview digital box installed, he would like to come along and carry out an examination in relation to the installation work. The victim agrees and is told that he will attend within the hour. Within 15 minutes the male attends the property and is shown to where the television and digital box are located.
Later the victim discovers property has been stolen from within the room where this alleged work was carried out. One victim made enquiries with the Digital Switchover Helpline to discover they had no record of this alleged work.
Suspect Description:
Male, White, 5'10", aged in his 40's, medium build, fair hair, balding, clean shaven, no distinguishing accent wearing brown shoes and blue jeans.
He was also wearing a navy blue raincoat / anorak type and had in his possession a black leather briefcase with a logo of some kind on the front of the case. The offender was driving a small white van parked nearby, make and model and index number unknown at this time.

Rural Reach at the Racecourse 2
I would like to bring a major local event to your attention: Rural Reach at the Racecourse 2. Being involved closely with a Neighbourhood Watch group myself I think this free event has a lot to offer.
The original event in 2007 was extremely successful and this new event on Friday 25th September 10.00 to 4.00 pm will be even bigger and better, jam-packed with exhibitors and workshops providing information on the wide range of support services that are available to local voluntary and community groups to help them in their work.
There is an excellent line-up of over 30 exhibitors from national, regional and local organisations. The Big Lottery Fund, The Charity Commission, Future Builders, Pro Help, IT4Communities, The Media Trust, Community Foundation, YMCA and Planning Aid East Midlands and representatives from the county and district councils plan to be there.
The day will include a programme of free, short workshops focussing on key issues of importance for groups: how to attract funding; applying for grants; how to sharpen your media and communication skills; working with volunteers, and other topical issues. See our website www.snvb.org.uk for updated information and a full list of exhibitors and workshops.
Come and meet the experts at The Empress Stand, Towcester Racecourse, London Road, Towcester, NN12 6LB which is an attractive and convenient local venue. Thanks to support from Capacitybuilders and the Big Lottery the event and workshops are free-of-charge.

8/9/09 Doorstep Action Network Look Out
Phone: 0345 23 07 702 Website: www.northants.police.uk/lookout
Every Day in Northamptonshire, people are prone to falling victim to doorstep crime. Most victims are elderly or vulnerable.
Whether you are caring for a family member, working as a professional in the community care or community safety field, or just keeping an eye out for a neighbour, you may be the only person that has regular contact with the person(s) you care for and can play a vital role in preventing them from becoming a victim.
Door Step Crime takes two forms:
DISTRACTION BURGLARY - Distraction burglars or bogus callers will call at a house with the intention of tricking their way inside to steal money and/or other valuables.
They may be smartly dressed claiming to be from the Water Board, Council, the Police, Health organisations or Charities. The caller could be a man or woman and even a child. They will use any story to gain access to your property. For Example, need to use your phone or have lost a pet.
ROGUE DOORSTEP TRADER - Rogue doorstep traders will use a trade as a means to extract large sums of money from people.
They will offer services at your doorstep such as block paving, roofing, fascias, gardening. They may also be selling goods. They will often give a vey low quote that will increase as the work begins.
Doorstep Action Network (DAN) has been created to bring together members of the public, private, public charity and community sector Organisations.
0345 23 07 702 - has been created so that we can provide a better service for preventing and detecting Distraction Burglaries and Rogue Doorstep traders.
** PLEASE REMEMBER: If a crime is in progress you must call 999 **
We are asking anyone who has contact with an elderly or vulnerable person to pass on the gentle crime prevention reminders detailed below.
