March 2010

12/3/10 Doorstep Action Network

Northamptonshire Police and partners are predicating that doorstep crime is likely to peak this March and April.

Distraction Burglars or 'bogus callers' will call at a house with the intention of tricking their way inside to steal from residents.

These criminals could be dressed in to look officials from the council, the police, health organisations or charities. These callers may tell you they are from the gas/water/electric boards and need to turn off the water because of a leak. Please remember that these 'boards' no longer exist.

Please pass this message on to those you care about and help reduce doorstep crime.

If you are concerned about a caller at your door or suspect that distraction burglars or rogue doorstep traders are operating in your community, please call our dedicated Doorstep crime Action Network (DAN) number 0345 23 07 702.

You can read about the tactics these criminals use at www.northants.police.uk/lookout http://www.northants.police.uk/lookout

** PLEASE REMEMBER: If a crime is in progress you must call 999 **

8/3/10 Emergency SMS Service

Emergency SMS (ESMS) is a national and essential service for members of our communities who are unable to use the 999 voice service. It will improve access to the 999 service and is initially aimed at the hearing impaired and speech impaired, whose preferred channel of choice is SMS.

Raising awareness of this service - both within our communities and amongst frontline contact management staff - and getting it right when we are contacted, is critical to improving confidence and trust in the Police Service.

This bulletin provides key information about this important service, with a view to assisting you in raising awareness of ESMS within your organisation and local communities.
