17/9/10 Good News

POLICE in Northampton are rolling out a new laptop-tracking device in the latest crime prevention initiative under Operation Guardian.

The town has experienced a number of house burglaries in which laptop computers have been targeted.

The Force has now acquired a large number of licences from a software company for distribution for around Northamptonshire, with most being allocated to laptop burglary hotspot areas.

Force crime prevention manager Laura Major said: “We have carried out a lot of analytical work around dwelling burglaries in the town which has identified laptops as one of the most common items to be stolen. “This work has helped us secure Home Office funding specifically for laptop tracking devices.

“We have purchased a large number of unique codes which are used to download tracking software called LoJack. “In the event of a laptop being stolen, the company’s Theft Recovery Team uses the software to help locate the stolen computer, working with the police to recover the computer, and reunite it with its owner.

“The devices are already being used in other Forces, such as West Midlands and West Yorkshire, to good effect.

“We are confident that this device will help raise awareness around laptop thefts and enable us to continue the success to date of Operation Guardian.”

The software licences will be distributed to repeat victims, door-to-door in key hotspot areas and via police surgeries.

The device – called Lo-Jack For Laptops – is a software-based theft recovery and identity protection service that tracks, locates and recovers stolen computers and remotely deletes files.

16/9/10 Crime Prevention Advice

1 in 4 residential burglaries are as a result of insecurity, which provide offenders with the opportunity to enter the premises. Please ensure that all residents in your area aware of the need to keep windows and doors locked when the property is empty. When the occupier is at home, dependent on which room they are in, windows and doors in all other areas of the house should be shut and where possible locked.

If the occupant goes upstairs to the first floor, then all ground floor doors should be locked and all windows in the closed position. With the run up to the festive season if presented with the opportunity burglars will be doing their Christmas shopping at our expense - make sure it doesn't happen in your area.

Further advice can be obtained by contacting your local crime prevention officer who will be glad to give you a call or visit your property. Please ring Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111 222.

10/9/10 Free Electric Blanket Testing

This is a message from Northamptonshire West Police to all residents on behalf of Northampton Fire and Rescue Service.

All electric blankets found to be faulty at a testing session are replaced free of charge (limited to one per household).

Electric blankets should be checked by a qualified technician every three years for signs of wear or damage.

Although electric blankets are made to strict safety standards, any blanket which is used or stored incorrectly, or is more than ten years old may be a fire risk so it is vital that people use this potentially life-saving opportunity to get their electric blankets tested.

Testing sessions are taking place across the county during 13th to 17th September.

They have been organised by the county council alongside Age Concern with support from the Electrical Safety Council.
·
· Monday 13th September - Mounts fire station, Mounts Northampton
· Tuesday 14th September - West Glebe Park Pavilion, Cottingham Road, Corby
· Wednesday 15th September - Brackley Fire Station, St James Road, Brackley
· Thursday 16th September - Riverside Resource Centre, Islington Road, Towcester
· Friday 17th September - Age Concern, Billing Road, Northampton

10/9/10 Trading Standards

This is a message from Northamptonshire West Police to all the Neighbourhood Watch members on behalf Trading Standards.

Trading Standards have been made aware of an incident in Kettering. A gentleman had some work done on his chimney one month ago for which he paid £14,000 cash. The 'builder' that carried out the work left a business card at the time.

He was a white male, 5ft 10" - 6ft, broad build, 50's - early 60's, dark receding hair, local accent. Today, a gentleman calling himself Simon King called at the door stating that he was from Trading Standards and that he was investigating the work that had been carried out. He showed a business card that was identical to the one left by the original 'builder' and asked for the original business card to be given to him.

We think that the name of the business could be AB something or Aerial something but the gentleman cannot remember. There was also a discussion that if the gentleman paid another £14,000 he could claim back 80% of the amount paid as part of a government scheme.

The 'Trading Standards Officer' was a white male, glasses, black hair, 5ft 6" - 7", medium build, mid 50's, local accent. He was clean shaven in a suit and seemed to have trouble with his right knee.

This is clearly a scam and Trading Standards and the Police will be investigating. Please alert colleagues that Trading Standards will always show valid identification and would not act in this way.

If you are concerned about a caller at your door or suspect that distraction burglars or rogue doorstep traders are operating in your community, please call our dedicated Doorstep crime Action Network (DAN) number 0345 23 07 702.
