Neighbourhood Watch

Please join this group if you would like to have email notifications sent whenever a Neighbourhood Watch notice is posted.

Call the Northamptonshire Police switchboard on 03000 111 222 or dial 999 in an emergency.

Alternatively you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

When you go out always lock doors and close windows (coming up to hot weather in particular) even if you leave just for a few moments!

Be vigilant in your surroundings and if anything suspicious seen call Police on 03000 111 222 or contact neighbourhood watch (Linda) and other co-ordinators.

Most people who come to your door will be genuine callers. But it's best to make sure. Genuine callers will not mind waiting whilst you contact their company for verifrication.

If you live next door to someone elderly or venerable just pop in on them from time to time to make sure everything is ok.

Don't leave anything on display in your vehicle, such as bags purses or anything that may look of value..
Don't leave tools in work vehicles as this is an easy target for criminals .
The fitting of a burglar alarm is a good deterrent to any burglar (and is not just a ringing box) they want to get in and out as quick as possible without any audible warnings that may alert others.

Keep a list of any serial numbers and model numbers of any property and mark with u/v pen your postcode.
When out make use of timers to switch on lights and TV's/radios to give the appearance of someone at home.
Visible alarms, good lighting and carefully directed security lighting together with strong door and window locks can put off burglars.

If anyone wishes to discuss crime prevention please contact any member of the Brackley rural Safer Community Team either by SCTBrackleyRural [at] northants [dot] police [dot] uk (e-mail) or the above number.

19/12/11 Witness Appeal - Fatal RTC A43 at Evenley

Northamptonshire Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the A43, between the Barley Mow and Evenley roundabout, which occurred at around 8.25am on Saturday morning (20 December).

A 62-year-old man from Bournemouth, Dorset, died after the red Seat Ibiza he was driving was in collision with central barrier before coming to a stop, partially in lane one, on the northbound dual carriageway.

The man got out of his vehicle and began to cross the carriageway on foot. He was then in collision with a blue Vauxhall Cavalier which was travelling in the same direction.

He was air lifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 42-year-old man from Winchester, Hampshire, was uninjured.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this collision, or the initial incident when the Seat was in collision with the barrier.

Anyone with information, or who witnessed these incidents, should contact the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615.

2/12/2011 Victims and witnesses invited to take part in Victim Support focus groups

Dear members and supporters,

Neighbourhood and Home Watch members are invited to take part in focus groups and interviews hosted by Victim Support over the next three months as part of a national project to raise awareness of important local issues facing victims and witnesses.

The project is aimed at victims and witnesses across England & Wales who have experienced crime within the last two years and are not currently involved in criminal justice proceedings or a court case relating to the crime.

Findings will be collated by Victim Support to make sure that each new police and crime commissioner has victim and witness issues on their agenda when they are elected in November 2012.  If you are interested in taking part in a focus group or interview and would like to find out more information, please click here: http://www.ourwatch.org.uk/news_and_events/news/victims_and_witnesses_invited_to_take_part_in_victim_support_focus_groups/

25/11/2011 Update on the Introduction of Police Crime Commissioners (PCCs)

Dear all,

The Home Office has released more details regarding the elections of Police Crime Commissioners (PCCs) in each police force area in England and Wales taking place on 15 November 2012.

PCCs will be able to set priorities for the police force within their force areas, respond to the needs and demands of their communities more effectively, ensure that local and national priorities are suitably funded by setting a budget and the local precept, and hold to account the local chief constable for the delivery and performance of the force.

This link http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/police/police-crime-commissioners/ is the general Home Office page for the most up-to-date links and updates regarding PCCs.

What’s happening from a Neighbourhood and Home Watch Perspective?

Clinks have been awarded the Home Office fund for delivering support to the voluntary sector regarding the rollout of PCCs and they are currently in the process of gathering the needs of the voluntary sector by way of a meeting taking place in London on the 13th December 2011.  From this meeting, a plan will be drawn up with what tools and training will be available for us to use. Unfortunately, this meeting clashes with our National Board and Regional Representative meeting in Leicester.  However, Ron Simpson from Rutland will be attending on our behalf and will be feeding back on the developments from the meeting.

We will ensure that we keep you all up-to-date and promote suitable toolkits to help you decide how you will approach the introductions of the PCCs over the forthcoming year.

14/11/2011 Updates and Amendments to Window Sticker Order Process

Dear All,

Please be advised that the original communication circulated about the new order process for Neighbourhood and Home Watch window stickers has now been updated and amended. The update reflects two new Towergate distribution points (Didcot and Great Yarmouth), with additional changes to contact details listed for some offices. The amended document can be downloaded from here: http://www.ourwatch.org.uk/resource_centre/document_library/neighbourhood_and_home_watch_window_stickers_new_order_process/?page=3&cat_id=37&sort=alpha-a  (The original link circulated is still 'live' but the document itself has been updated.)

Following the launch of the new order process which took place on 10th October 2011, in partnership with Towergate Insurance, 508 orders have been placed, equating to the distribution of 61,000 window stickers across England and Wales. In addition, a number of Towergate representatives have been invited by coordinators to attend meetings around the country to liaise with members directly.

15/11/2011 E-petition on metal thefts

To all Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members & coordinators in England & Wales,

You cannot have failed to read in the papers or seen reports on the television that there has been a staggering increase in the number of metal thefts in the last year.  I would encourage ALL Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members to sign an online e-petition, which would cause a parliamentary debate on the subject of moving towards a cashless business model for scrap metal dealers.  You can sign the petition here: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/406

Many of these crimes would stop overnight if there was no ready market for their ill-gotten gains.  Ninety per cent of transactions in scrap metal yards are by cash.  Record-keeping is non-existant and no questions are asked.  Existing legislation is very weak and goes back to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 1964.  Maximum fines are very low.  A cashless model would be another step on the route to effective legislation.

16/11/2011 New BBC programme wants to hear from you

Message sent on behalf of James Maddan, Chair of Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network for England & Wales

Dear members, coordinators and supporters,

Doorstep crime linked with distraction burglary is one of the most despised crimes dealt with by the police.  The majority of victims are females over the age of 80 years, who live alone, and frequently the stolen property is of low resale value but high sentimental value.  Many victims lose their life savings and the detrimental effect on their health is shocking.  They will not go out and become isolated in their own homes.  The average life expectancy of the victim of distraction burglary is 9 months.

Gloria Hunniford and the BBC are planning a programme to highlight this nasty crime and are looking to hear from victims and also wish to hear from those who have dealt with these criminals effectively.

This is an opportunity for Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members to highlight the work they are doing tackling crime in their area and making their community a safer place to live.

12/10/2011 POLICING PRIORITIES - HAVE YOUR SAY

Do you want to have your say on what the police and partners should be focusing on and to help make decisions on where the police should be spending money?

There are many ways in which you can give us your views:

The new 101 police non-emergency number goes live today

The new 101 police non-emergency number goes live today in Northamptonshire

101 is the new number to report crime and other concerns to Northamptonshire Police that do not require an emergency police response.

You can call 101 to report a crime or incident that has already happened, to speak to your local Safer Community Team or any other officer or member of staff, to give us information about crime or criminals in your area, or to make a general enquiry.
999 should still be used in an emergency.

19/9/11 Dog Watch

Following the hugely successful launch of Dog Watch in East Northamptonshire and Wellingborough, the Dog Watch team have extended the scheme across the whole county and are keen to invite all members of Community Connect to join as a member.

Dog watch, originally developed in Stevenage as a way of extending the already successful Neighbourhood Watch network to the wider community, caught the attention of local Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Ian Blackburn-Elliot, who along with the Dog Watch team, have introduced the scheme to Northamptonshire.

The scheme recognises it is often those who walk their dogs, runners or anyone who likes to get out and about, who are the first to spot something unusual or amiss, such as criminal damage or an incident of anti-social behaviour, providing valuable eyes and ears for the community.

The scheme is open to anyone aged 16 or over and you do not need to be a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme to join Dog Watch.

The head co-ordinator Ian Blackburn-Elliot said: “It is a sad fact that the missing links in many crimes are often in out of the way places in our countryside, or areas without passing traffic. Dog walkers are often the means by which vital evidence is found, as dogs stray into areas not normally frequented by passers by.

“It has been proved that the ‘Dog Watch’ scheme, not only has the potential to discover evidence, which may help to solve a crime, it can also make a difference to the surrounding community”.

Chief Inspector Gary Ashton, a supporter of Dog Watch said: “Since its earliest days, policing has been a community activity. I am always keen to extend community involvement in policing. The Dog Watch Scheme provides such an opportunity, as dog walkers are frequently the first to discover something out of the ordinary in their local area.”

14/9/11 Have your say

Do you want to have your say on what the police and partners should be focusing on and to help make decisions on where the police should be spending money?

Last year Northamptonshire Police Authority and Force, together with the six countywide Community Safety Partnerships, undertook a large-scale consultation on your priorities, specifically looking at crime and community safety.

Between October and January 2010, you or your community group may have taken part in a public meeting, completed a postal or online survey or “Have your say pack” or attended a workshop/focus group. We were very grateful for the time you spent in giving us your opinions and would like to invite you to take part again this year.

13/9/11 Budding Special Constables wanted!

We are looking for Special Constables to join the existing team and work alongside Officers and Police Community Support Officers across the county.

Our Special Constables respond to and deal with a wide variety of incidents.. They have the same powers and uniform as a Police Officer, the only difference is that they are voluntary.

This is a great opportunity to gain an insight into the life of an Officer, and develop skills and experiences working alongside them. If you are interested in pursuing a career within the Police Force, then this is for you.

In addition, you'll be making a difference in the community, and doing something new and exciting with your spare time!

We are holding an Open Evening on October 5 for those interested in becoming a Special Constable.

For more details click here or call the Recruitment Team on 03000 111 222 ext 7383
